Presenting a very rare Original Historic Antique Circa 1870's Carte-de-Visite Photograph of Russian Empress Maria Alexandrovna, wife of Czar Alexander II and mother of Alexander III. The photo captures her beautifully expressive face. There appears to be somewhat of a sadness to her. A very fine image. It was taken by legendary Russian Court Photographer Count Sergei Lvovich Levitsky (1819-1898). This is one of the rare available examples which are marked with Levitsky’s name, in contrast to his images that are duplicated by other photographers and are marked by their names. Levitsky was an important pioneer photographer. In 1851, he received the first ever Gold Medal awarded for Portrait Photography. In 1849 at the Paris Exposition of the Second Republic, Levitsky was awarded the first Gold Medal for Landscape Photography. The photo is in very good, solid vintage condition, but has normal expected lightness due to age (see photos). Yet it is a very expressive image. No serious problems. Photo measures approximately 4 ¼ x 2 ¾ inches. A classic historic photo.
