Description

Silver gelatin print from the Scenic South magazine archives, showing the Ormond Garage of Ormond Beach, Fla. Roughly 7x10 inches, vintage print for use in the magazine of that era. The magazine was financed by Standard Oil and was a feature of Southern waiting rooms throughout the 1940s and thereafter. Credited to Chauncey T. Hinman and dated 1962, it shows the exterior of the garage when it had become a glorified parking lot. Earlier in the century it was famous for sport tuning and attracted the business of legendary drivers, who could speed-test the garage's work on the hard-packed sand of Ormond Beach. The garage was destroyed by fire in 1976, so all you can see there now is its historic marker on East Granada Avenue. Also in this offer is a photo of a previous historic marker, also dated 1962, when the garage had taken up the less glamorous work of housing the vehicles of motel residents.
