SPEAKER BIDS GOODBYE TO MEMBERS WASHINGTON, D.C. AUG. 21—SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE BANKHEAD BIDS GOODBYE TO FELLOW MEMBERS OF CONGRESS AS THE FIRST SESSION OF THE 75TH CONGRESS ADJOURNED TONIGHT. 8/21/37 This photograph captures Speaker of the House William B. Bankhead bidding farewell to fellow members of Congress as the first session of the 75th Congress adjourns. This moment marks the end of a legislative period where various significant bills and policies would have been discussed and passed. The adjournment of Congress is a formal event, often filled with reflections on the session's accomplishments and the legislative work ahead. Speaker Bankhead’s role as the presiding officer of the House is crucial in guiding the legislative agenda and maintaining order during sessions. === This 7x8.5” original type 1 photograph is from the personal collection of photographer Wes Howland (1906-1956). Howland was a reporter with the Harris-Ewing news service in Washington D.C from 1931-1941, and went on to serve with the military. He was one of a small number of photographers with complete access to the White House, Capitol, Senate, and House. This photo was part of a collection of over 1200 8x10” Wes Howland personal archive images that we acquired from his estate. These original prints are exceptionally rare, if not the only that exist. Not only did Mr Howland have incredible access to the government figures of the day, but he was a highly skilled photographer who produced some stunning historical images and documented Washington D.C. in the 1930s like few others. This photo is a unique piece of history, and we trust you will enjoy it in your collection. We are happy to offer discounts if you order multiple photos.
